Annie M. G. Schmidt
I would define Annie M. G. Schmidt as a Dutch hero. When I think of a hero, it is a person who is courageous, different from the average person, makes an impact and others will remember his or her actions.
Every Dutch person grew up with Annie M.G. Schmidt and will know some of her work: Jip & Janneke, Abeltje, ja zuster nee zuster, Pluk van de pletteflet, Otje, Floddertje, Famillie Stampertje, Dikkertje Dap, Mijn Opa, Minoes, Ibbeltje etc.
She became known by writing small nursery rhymes in the newspaper ‘Het Parool’. It became a hit.
In all her stories, songs or rhymes she uses very simple, basic Dutch. Even though it looks quite simple, it is incredible clever. What makes it interesting is that it is a bit absurd, ironic, puts things in perspective and it is funny.
Annie M.G. Schmidt was sceptic about decency and authority and was a bit stubborn. I think this is also why people loved her. She dared to say things that weren’t really allowed. This connects her with children, being slightly naughty.
Nowadays her work is part of Dutch culture. She left her mark and will not easily be forgotten, just like a hero.
