Padraig Mac Piarais

Padraig Mac Piarais

Rugadh Padraig Mac Piarais i mBaile Atha Cliath sa bhliain 1879 san ait ar a dtugtar Sraid an Phiarsaigh inniu. Ba mhac le saor cloiche Sasanach & le bean as Co. na Mi a bhi ann. Luath go maith ina shaol leirigh se meas ar an naisiunachas agus ar chearta daonna. Chailigh se mar abhcoide dli tar eis a chuid scolaiochta. Ceann de na chead chuiseanna a bhi aige na fear a chosaint as ucht a ainm a bheith i nGaeilge ar a chairt, rud a bhi in aghaidh an dli ag an am. Is cosuil go raibh tionchar mor ag an gcas seo air mar go bhfacthas do go raibh dli na Sasanach ann chun na Gaeil a chur faoi chois agus a gcultur a scrios. D‘fhoghlaim se ona mhathair an saibhreas brea a bhi sa gcultur seo agus shocraigh se a dhicheall a dheanamh e a chosaint ar aon bhealach a raibh se in ann. Thuig se go maith an dochar a bhi an coras oideachais ag deanamh don Ghaeilge. Chreid se go mba choir go mbeadh coras oideachais dha theangach sa tir. Bhunaigh se scoil Eanna i 1908 tar eis na cuairte a thug se ar an mBeilg chun staidear a dheanamh ar an oideachas dha theangach. Chonaic se le linn a chuid ama sa Bheilg go mbeadh se easca go maith dha theangachas a chuir i bhfeidhm da mbeadh an toil ann. Scoil Ghaelach a bhi inti seo a chuir an leanbh chun cinn sa choras. D’eirigh thar barr leis an scoil ce go raibh go leor fadhbanna airgid aige. Thug an scoil ceann rodaiocht agus dea shampla do scoileanna an 20u haois o thaobh Oideachais Ghaelach agus forbairt iomlan an linbh.

Niorbh fhada afach gur thuig se go mbeadh air an lamh laidir a usaid chun an sprioc seo a bhaint amach.

Thug se a chead chuirt ar Ros Muc sa bhliain 1903 chun abhar oidi de chuid Conradh na Gaeilge a chur faoi scrudu Gaeilge. Cheap se go raibh se sna flaithis nuair a bhain se amach our own Gaelic kingdom. I Ros Muc fuair se ceantar laidir aon teangach Gaelach ina raibh an teanga agus an sean chultur i mbarr reime. Is i measc na ngnath dhaoine a chaith se a chuid ama ag eisteacht an t-am ar fad. Deir muintir na h-aite ina gcuid smaointe air gur beag cainte na seanchais a bhi aige, nach raibh uaidh ach a bheith ag su gach a raibh ina thimpeall. Bhi roinnt rudai i Ros Muc a chuir deistean air afach, an bochtanas, na tiarnai, an R.I.C. Chonaic se chomh maith go raibh an bearlachas ag bru siar i dtreo Rosmuc de reir a cheile. Chreid se go raibh se in am fail reidh leis na Sasanaigh.

Ag socraid an tsean phoblachtanaigh O Donabhain Rossa thug se oraid ag bagairt ar na Sasanaigh saoirse a thabhairt do na Gaeil agus an tir a Ghaelu aris. Deirtear go raibh tionchar mor ag an oraid seo ar mhuintir na h-Eireann. Ba leir anois go raibh se sasta lamh laidir agus foreigean a usaid chun e seo a bhaint amach. I 1916 d’eirigh na Gaeil amach in aghaidh na Sasanach in Ard Oifig an Phoist ar Shraid Ui Chonaill i mBaile Atha Cliath. Bhi an Piarsaich mar oifigeach ar na hOglaigh agus chuir se a ainm le Forogra na Poblachta. Da bharr seo cuireadh chun bais e i bPriosiun Chill Mhaighnean. Ni raibh se ach 37 bliain d’aois.

Creideann muide anseo i Scoil Bhriocain gur thug se anam ar ais don tir. Leirigh se meas ar na Gaeil agus ar a bhain leo ag am nuair a bhi an cultur a scrios go laethuil ag polasai stait. Theastaigh uaidh an scrios seo a stopadh agus da bharr seo a cuireadh chun bais e.

Padraig Mac Piarais

Patrick Mac Piarais was born in Dublin in 1879 in the place that today is called Pearse Street. He was the son of an English stone mason & a Co. Meath woman. Quite early in his life he showed a special interest in Human and minority rights. He qualified as a barrister in his early twenties. One of the first cases was to represent the man who was prosecuted for having his name printed in Irish on his cart, which was against the law at the time. It seems that this case had a profound effect on Mac Piarais as it demonstrated to him the lengths that the English establishment would go to destroy Irish Culture. Mac Piarais gained a great love of the Irish Language & culture from his mother and he was soon to join the new organization that was established to preserve the Irish Language, Conradh na Gaeilge. It was through his work with this organization that led him to visit Ros Muc.

He first visited Ros Muc in 1903 to inspect an examination that was taking place in the primary school in Gort Mor. During his stay in Ros Muc he was amazed an excited at the strength & richness of the culture. Indeed he referred to the area as our own Gaelic Kingdom. He spent his time here visiting local houses listening, absorbing all around him. Before long he built a summer cottage which he used as a retreat to concentrate on his writings. While in Ros muc he also saw a threat to the culture of the area in the exclusive use of English by the Police, merchants & in the exclusive use of English instruction in the local schools.

It was in Ros muc that he wrote his oration at the grave of the great Gaelic Republican O Donnabhain Rosa. This is arguably the most inspiring speech given by an Irish Republican and is comparable to the Gettysburg address. This speech inspired generations of Irish men to fight English Tyranny and to break the eight hundred year link with Britain. In 1916 the Irish rebelled against the English with Padraig Mac Piarais as one of its leaders. The rebellion failed and Mac Piarais was executed shortly afterwards, he was only thirty seven years of age. In 1919 inspired by the deeds of the leaders of 1916 the Irish Rebelled again and after a long guerrilla campaign gained independence for 26 counties that eventually became the Republic Of Ireland.

We here in Scoil Bhriocain are very proud of our links to Padraig Mac Piarais. We believe that he gave Ireland back her soul and made us proud of our language and traditions. He also gave our soldiers the courage to take on the largest army in the world at the time and eventually win our freedom. We are very proud to call him our hero.
